SRI LANKA: Conflict timeline

COLOMBO, 28 April 2009 (IRIN) - As government forces tighten their grip on a narrow spit of land in northeastern Sri Lanka and the last remants of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who have been fighting for an independent Tamil homeland since 1983, international concern over the safety of thousands of civilians trapped alongside them intensifies.

More than 100,000 civilians have fled the combat areas since 20 April, while the UN estimates that up to 50,000 non-combatants remain trapped inside. Full text
