EDITORIAL: Cease-fire in Sri

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared victory in the country's civil war after government forces hunted down the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the northern coastal area.

However, it is too early to rejoice. Many civilians were killed in the crossfire, and even after the cease-fire, the humanitarian crisis continues. Reconciliation between the majority ethnic group Sinhalese and the Tamils, who constitute less than 20 percent of the population, is not an easy undertaking. Reviving the countryside, debilitated by decades of civil war, will also be a long journey. Full text
