Journalistic cliche cannot quite encapsulate the events of last week. Saying they were momentous moments would be in the order of gross understatement. There is a feeling that three decades of palpable violence have ended, and that the over thirty-year old long national nightmare is now finally behind us.

It is true that there are many bridges to build, both in the concrete and in the figurative. But, after the death knell has been sounded for the most ruthless terror outfit in the world, positions are bound to thaw on both sides of the largely artificial Tamil-Sinhala national divide.
