Saving Mr P’s soul

(nation)My religious octogenarian friend, after viewing the visuals of Prabhakaran’s body on TV, asked me what she, as a Roman Catholic and an ardent churchgoer, should do. “Should we pray for his soul?” she queried. I replied that Mr. P had doubtless qualified with straight A’s for the biblical bottomless pit as described by St. John in Revelation and was probably on his way there and that it was best to leave it to God to handle his soul. In my opinion it was beyond the reach of any human being including Mr. P’s ardent fans in the West, to resurrect his soul. After all, Velupillai Prabhakaran was responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of human beings directly and indirectly, and for the recruitment of innocent children, for his ruthless terrorist outfit that led Sri Lanka along a tortuous pathway for 30 years. When he was alive these rich and powerful fans could surely have guided him and cleansed his soul, by telling him that butchering humans, even though they were not Europeans, was not the way to achieve anything.
