Assessing Karuna’s karma

(LB)Vinayagamurthy Muralitharan, formerly ‘Colonel’ Karuna Amman of the LTTE, at one time second only to Velupillai Prabhakaran in that organization’s military wing, reputedly the most brilliant military strategist in the outfit, is now the Minister of National Integration and since a few weeks ago one of the Vice Presidents of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the largest party in the United People’s Freedom Alliance. Karuna is in fact the only Tamil SLFPer holding a ministerial post in the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government and is the only Tamil (correct me if I am wrong) to hold such a high position in the SLFP in that party’s history.

How did this man, who was implicated in the killing of hundreds of Muslims in the Kattankudy and Eravur massacres, and accused of ordering the capture and killing of over 600 police officers in cold blood in Batticaloa in the heyday of the LTTE wriggle his way to what he is today? The question could be put in another way: why was such a man allowed to get to where he is today? Why is Karuna tolerated? Why is his past not thrown in his face at every turn? Full text
