Indian foreign secretary's visit

(DM)There has been a wholly unexpected reaction to my article on the visit of Shanker Menon the Indian Foreign Secretary, to Sri Lanka, published on Thursday last week. I have been faulted by many for being economical with the truth, which of course I deny. Permit me to share some of the views expressed for the benefit of our readers.

Whilst they do agree with me that we should cultivate the closest of relations with our giant neighbour and swim as close as possible to the ‘shark’ so that we would not be attacked, they also state that we need to be extremely cautious. I had suggested that we revive two initiatives by previous governments, the Treaty of Peace Friendship and Cooperation and the Defence Cooperation Agreement.
