Army assures protection to surrendering LTTE cadres Military spokesman

Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara yesterday called on LTTE cadres facing advancing Government troops in the Wanni and Mullaitivu areas to lay down their arms assuring them that they will be given full protection.

Addressing the weekly Defence briefing, Nanayakkara said that they were being used as cannon fodder by the Tigers in a losing battle. It is a matter of time before the depleted LTTE is wiped out by the security forces, he said.

Answering a query by Foreign Correspondents saying that the Army Commander had said that the war will not come to an end until the last LTTE cadre is killed and how come the lives of some of the Tigers who have surrendered in the last few days have been spared, Nanayakkara explained that according to the international convention in war, when the enemy surrenders in battle, he or she is not killed.
